On a super clear day, from the top of Mount Diablo you can see 35 of California's 58 counties. The locals say that with binoculars, Yosemite's Half Dome is even visible from Mt. Diablo! The mountain was formed when a mass of underlying rock was gradually forced up through the earth's surface near the San Francisco Bay, east of Berkeley.

Primitive Camping

Due to the usual high fire dangers, there is no disprsed camping on primitive back roads. Most of these dirt roads are locked with gates anyway. Shucks!

Hiking

Hike most all year long, but be prepared for drizzly conditions in the winter months. Tons of trails, Accessed by numerous neighborhoods around Clayton & Walnut Creek. Wildflowers can start as early as March.

HorseBack

There are equestrian trails around here, but gates can be locked so make sure you call ahead for brochures & maps. 925/ 837-2525
