Pronounced zai-ziks, most people know remote Zzyzx Road as an exit off the Interstate 15, on your way to Las Vegas. But there may be some sort of life out here in the Mojave Desert. This photo is from a small abandon resort that was in operation within the last few decades, once called Zzyzx Mineral Springs Resort. The locale was also known as "Soda Springs" in the mid-19th century. These days it's a Desert Studies Center - which sits on the far northwest side of Mojave National Preserve, near Baker, CA

description:
Odd, yet familiar. Overly filmed/photographed freeway exit off of Interstate 15, on the way to Las Vegas, NV. Zzyzx Road crosses Interstate 15, and dead-ends in both directions. Remote desert research community: Desert Studies Center run by California State University. Not much else.
On the north side exit of Zzyzx Road, the pavement becomes dirt about 4 miles from freeway. a wide desert wash and maybe decent for camping. Sand could be an issue for RVs, so beware of rugged terrain.
The south side of Zzyzx Rd, paved road stops at the research center and becomes a dirt road. The through route, to Old Government Road, is a one lane, unpaved route.
