California's population is diverse as her dramatic landscape. Rural small towns in the west hold a combination of cultures: hippies, yuppies, cowboys, red necks, hillbilly hicks and retirees blend together in their own unique disguises. You can be sipping a mocha at a cafe one hour, buy organic salad and soup for lunch, get a massage in the afternoon, grocery shop in the street at the farmer market, bike home, hike at sunset and then attend a drum circle - all in the same 15 mile radius.
The closer to a big urban population center, the more choices for entertainment, housing and restaurants. The more rural locations are in turn, more organic, closer to nature, less busy, less traffic, more remote and lesser known. These regions also tend to be prime for tourists w/ outdoor recreation, natural hot springs, redwood forests, bike paths, hiking trails, community gardens, places to relax and enjoy nature. A good majority of these towns have colleges or universities - where the young people thrive, learn and enjoy, eventually settling to create their simple life. Hippy towns are usually very hiker friendly, camper hospitable, and bikers are always welcomed.
