Way up in California's North State - these ranch lands called Modoc country, Alturas is the only city with any real services. Only one blinking red light in town, at the main intersection, US Highway 395 @ Hwy 299. Auto repair, gasoline, groceries, motels, restaurants, banks and since it is the county seat, a courthouse. The historic Niles Hotel is a focal point along the south end of Main Street. They ain't even gotta Walmart.

As rural as it gets. Still only one blinking stop light in town. A few grocery markets and gas stations, restaurants, banks, and businesses serve this cattle country town. The historic courthouse and the Niles Hotel are the highlights to town. Jess Valley, Mill Creek Falls and Blue Lake are both worth a visit, south of town US 395.
