San Diego&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/destin\/california-towns.php?tid=310\">Laguna Mountain<\/a> has some meadows and Big Bear Lake offers sage meadows, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/destin\/california-towns.php?tid=149\">Fawnskin<\/a> side.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99cc00;\"><strong>Wild Meadows range from 3000&#8242; elevation in the foothills, to about 11,000&#8242; elevation in the highcountry. Vacant of trees, these wide open areas are generally colder spots, with moisture and with fragile ecosystems.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eastern Sierra&#8217;s Inyo has gorgeous meadows of lupine wildflower (see above). Cattle grazing and 4&#215;4 roads all over, up to 12,000&#8242;. High country\u00a0mountain peaks surround. That area is called Coyote Flat w\/ Coyote Lake. 4WD needed! Winter, snowy and almost inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SNOW &#8211;<\/strong> Since meadows are generally located in the mountain regions, deep winter snow can make these special places impossible to reach (for about half the year). Summer is the prime time to explore the higher elevations, so plan accordingly.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13351\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wildflower.png\" alt=\"wildflower\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>WILDFLOWERS<\/strong> &#8211; Remember that the higher the elevation, the later the wildflowers will bloom. High Sierra meadows often bloom well into July &amp; August.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AUTUMN COLORS<\/strong> &#8211; Aspen groves are often located next to meadows. Fall colors can be quite decent around October, before the first snow fall of the season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8846\" style=\"width: 542px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bigmdwkern.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8846\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bigmdwkern-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Big Meadow Kern\" width=\"542\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bigmdwkern.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bigmdwkern-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bigmdwkern-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big Meadow, Kern Plateau in Sequoia NF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #a079c7;\"><strong>MENDO glade<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; In the <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/campstuff\/NF\/mendo.html\">Mendocino National Forest<\/a> the meadows are called &#8220;glades&#8221; &#8211; and the area has been heavily impacted by wildfire.<a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wilderness\/snow-mountain-wilderness\/\"> Snow Mountains Wilderness<\/a> was totally burnt in the Ranch Fire 2018, the largest wildfire in California history.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>NORCAL history<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Some Mountain Maidu tribes are known as the &#8220;Big Meadow Indians&#8221; &#8211; they made the Big Meadows of the Upper Feather River their home.
