The Upper Kings is situated in the Wilderness and National Park at the highest of elevation. Agriculture, farmlands and orchards of fruit.<\/p>\n<h4>The mid section of this mighty Kings River runs close to Hwy 180 inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/campstuff\/NP\/kingscyn.html\">Kings Canyon National Park<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13820\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/fish.png\" alt=\"fish\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lower Kings is popular among campers, fishermen, kayakers and rafters, accessible most of the year. Outside the National Park boundary, westward in lower elevations, many more camping options are available.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2835\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/NFS.gif\" alt=\"NFS\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">NOTE:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/campstuff\/NF\/sierra.html\"> Sierra National Forest<\/a> is located\u00a0 on the north side, along the river shore in between Pine Flat Lake &amp; Kings Canyon National Park. But <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/campstuff\/NF\/seqnf.html\">Sequoia National Forest<\/a> is located on the south side, so you may need more maps. Cell phone service is spotty or non-existent in this deep canyon.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lower Kings is best accessed via the paved roads, up behind <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/destin\/lakes\/pineflat.html\">Pine Flat Lake, California<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/signs\/symbols\/river.gif\" alt=\"river\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Trimmer Springs Road #11S12:<\/strong> a paved access road, that wraps around the northern shore of Pine Flat Reservoir. Very curvy and long, with 25 mph curves; this main route continues east into the massive Kings River Canyon.<\/p>\n<p>Google Maps may have this road crossing the river, towards the end. Proper signage is questionable in the area, since local rednecks love to shoot up signs. Trimmer route quickly peters out to narrow dirt roads, anywhere past the Mill Flat Campground area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower Kings is NOT easily reached via the National Park, nor Kings Canyon Highway 180.<\/strong> Dirt road travel is required on <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/backroads\/12s01-sierra-nf\/\">Road #12S01<\/a>, which can be steep and rocky at best. The drive is a steep climb up to the highway, which may require 4 wheel drive in some sections, depending on weather and land slides. This road is rough, so you will need at least a high clearance rig and a good forest map.\u00a0Winter brings some snow and abundant rains (NOV &#8211; APRIL).<\/p>\n<p>LANDSLIDES and ROCK SLIDES are common with ROAD CLOSURES not always posted on the Sierra National Forest, NFS web site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12843\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bigriverkings.jpg\" alt=\"big river kings\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bigriverkings.jpg 640w, https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/bigriverkings-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/iconz\/poppy32.gif\" alt=\"poppy\" width=\"70\" height=\"63\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Wildflowers are abundant in this region for springtime. (MARCH-MAY)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2105\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/camp.gif\" alt=\"camp\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>(north shore)<br \/>\nLower Kings River<br \/>\nelevation 1100&#8242;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sierra National Forest <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/signs\/symbols\/fish.gif\" alt=\"fish\" width=\"32\" height=\"20\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/campsites\/campground\/kirch-flat-campground\/\">Kirch Flat Campground NFS<\/a><\/strong> (17 sites)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/signs\/symbols\/picnic.gif\" alt=\"tables &amp; toilets\" width=\"32\" height=\"30\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/sierra\/recreation\/camping-cabins\/recarea\/?recid=45480&amp;actid=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bear Wallow Camping Area<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/sierra\/recreation\/camping-cabins\/recarea\/?recid=45478&amp;actid=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gravel Flat Camp Area<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>both above camps are free camp spots: boondocking, dispersed camps, primitive car camping, tent camping, RV camping, river fishing, kayaking, rafting<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><a style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/backroads\/12s01-sierra-nf\/\"><strong>Sierra Road #12S01<\/strong><\/a> <\/span>&#8211; primitive camping, few pit toilets; fishing access, some trailhead camps and RV spots along river. The northern most arm of this road is also referred to as Road# 12S001 Garnet Dike, on the NFS web site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12634\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/newbridge.jpg\" alt=\"newbridge\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/newbridge.jpg 640w, https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/newbridge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><br \/>\nAlong paved routes, near bridges, some dispersed camping is also allowed. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/camp\/pass\/fire.html\">Campfire permits are required<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><a style=\"color: #339966;\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/backroads\/sierra-nf-road-9\/\"><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Sierra Road #9 is Big Creek Canyon<\/span><\/a> <\/span>&#8211; <\/strong>a side route, graded dirt road worth exploring for primitive camping options. The farther you drive up, the more vegetation you will find. <a href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/active\/camp\/pass\/fire.html\">Campfire permits are required<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/destin\/lakes\/blackrock.html\">BlackRock Reservoir<\/a><\/strong> <\/span><strong>Road #11S12<\/strong>, another side route (paved) climbs steeply in elevation, along a cliff edge. A\u00a0210 acre day use park providing recreation that includes swimming, fishing and picnicking. The park has picnic tables, a group picnic area, BBQs, boat launching ramp and a playground. West of Pine Flat\u00a0Reservoir, this grassy county park is only open during daylight and no overnight camping is allowed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13994\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picnic.png\" alt=\"picnic\" width=\"131\" height=\"134\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next park down river is<br \/>\n<strong>Kings River Green Belt Park<\/strong>, which seems to be popular with joggers and dog walkers.
