Find yourself traveling the east San Diego county desert, on Highway 78 eastbound on the way to the Salton Sea. Passing the turn offs for <a title=\"borrego springs\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/destin\/california-towns.php?tid=49\">Borrego Springs<\/a>, slow down and look for the intersection of off-roaders &amp; ATVs @ Ocotillo Wells, California. <a title=\"ocotillow wells OHV park\" href=\"http:\/\/ohv.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=1217\">Ocotillo Wells State Vehicluar Recreation Area<\/a> is on the north (left) side of the highway and Split Mountain is on the right.<\/p>\n<p>From highway turn south (right) on to <strong>Split Mountain Road<\/strong>, which leads to numerous back road destinations. Ranch homes and private property line the first mile of the road, neighborhood general store and a tiny saloon, RV park and an ATV rental shop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Old Kane Springs Road<\/strong> is a main dirt road that parallels the highway from the narrows at <strong>San Felipe Wash<\/strong> to the Salton Sea. Old Kane Springs Rd intersect the\u00a0Split Mountain route about 1 mile south of highway.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=Split+Mountain+Road,+Borrego+Springs,+CA&amp;aq=0&amp;oq=Spl&amp;sll=33.061766,-116.12051&amp;sspn=0.084306,0.151234&amp;t=h&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Split+Mountain+Rd,+Borrego+Springs,+California+92004&amp;z=11&amp;iwloc=A&amp;output=embed\" height=\"350\" width=\"425\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<small><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-align: left;\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=Split+Mountain+Road,+Borrego+Springs,+CA&amp;aq=0&amp;oq=Spl&amp;sll=33.061766,-116.12051&amp;sspn=0.084306,0.151234&amp;t=h&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Split+Mountain+Rd,+Borrego+Springs,+California+92004&amp;z=11&amp;iwloc=A\">View Larger Map<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Split Mountain ranger station is before the <a title=\"anza elephant trees\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegoreader.com\/news\/2006\/jan\/05\/discover-botanical-oddities-known-elephant-trees-r\/\">Elephant Trees <\/a>nature trail. Near the railroad track, the paved road turns into Fish Creek Wash near Fish Creek Campground. If you have a low rider passenger car, you might wanna park it here and walk in to the canyon. Within the first few miles there is a lot to explore &#8211; fossils in walls, huge cliffs, wind caves, narrow canyons.<\/p>\n<p>The actual &#8220;split in the mountain&#8221; section is located just beyond the campground on a sandy desert road.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/parks\/anza\/splitmtn\/splitmtn.JPG\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anza Borrego&#8217;s Split Mountain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"wind caves climb up\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/parks\/anza\/windcaves\/exploring.jpg\">Wind Caves<\/a> are on the left side, just beyond the split<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"free camping anza\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/parks\/anza\/splitmtn\/coolcamp.jpg\">Oyster Shell Wash<\/a> intersecting on the opposite side of the canyon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a title=\"fish creek wash anza\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/GIFS\/parks\/anza\/windcaves\/fishcreekwash.jpg\">Fish Creek Wash<\/a> continues south, deep into the Carrizo badlands where 4&#215;4 is definitely needed. <\/strong>The trail system eventually loops back over to paved S2 @ Canebrake, via Pinyon\u00a0Mountain w\/ the Squeeze, or <a title=\"anza mud caves\" href=\"https:\/\/totalescape.com\/outside\/hikes\/canon-sin-nombre-slot-canyons\/\">Canon Sin Nombre<\/a>. Unlimited primitive camp sites, found inside every other nook and cranny.
