Split the Lodging
|
- Carpool to your destination with friends & they can chip in for gasoline. Save your nerves on the freeways & travel after rush hour traffic.
- Try the train. Read a book, relax, visit with friends, catch a bite to eat in the cafe car. Fares are quite reasonable & they often offer special deals.
|
- Bring a friend & share the cost of the hotel. A $100 dollar mountain cabin can turn into a more reasonable $25 per person when split four ways.
- Stay during the week when the rates are cheaper. Most inns jack up there prices by 20% for the weekend nights and even higher for holiday periods.

Backpacker Hostels

Overnight Camping
Camping out is a great alternative, cuz it is the cheapest option for overnight stays. A whole weekend for under $100 for transportation, food & fees. Camping areas can be found just about anywhere you want to go in California.
Find a really small campground or explore a dirt road to find a secluded spot. The average camp trip can run about $60 per person for the whole weekend. Groceries, gas, firewood & maybe even a park entrance fee. All else is FREE. After buying your outdoor gear (tent, sleeping bag & stove, etc.) once, it can last an entire decade easily.
