Most people know of San Bernardino only by the lyrics in a song "Route 66" and unless you live in the Inland Empire, you most likely avoid this big city at all cost. Traffic can be bad, shopping can be dangerous and crime can be unpredictable. (Crime rate here is more than double the national average.) Generally visitors just pass through the area, eager for the mountain destinations located just up the hill.

Old timers may refer to this city as San Berdu (or San Berdoo). Railroads, International Airport, and a whole network of freeways and residential subdivisions. Big box stores line the main thoroughfares, fast food and gas stations, oh yeah - a university, UC San Bernardino.
